JARGON BUSTER
Confused about terms and jargon on the net? I am not surprised. Hopefully I can help. Below is a more detailed description of what some of the terms mean. This will, hopefully, help you to understand just what is involved in setting up and then retaining a web site.
PAGES
Each screen of information is referred to as a page. There is no limit to the size of a page. Generally it is best to keep it to the size of the screen but there are some occasions when it is acceptable to scroll down a screen (as with this page) for more information (usually when the data is technical or a continuation of the opening headers).
DOMAIN NAME
This is your unique address on the internet. It can be www.yourcompany.co.uk or www.yourcompany.com (subject to the name not being taken already). There is an annual fee for the Domain Name, which can be different for .co.uk and .com. There is no reason why you could not have both to ensure that another company with a similar name does not set up a web site.
HOSTING
Once you have your domain name it needs to kept somewhere on the www. It is usually kept on an internet server run by a hosting company. There are loads and loads of hosting companies. I recommend www.1and1.co.uk as I have used them for a while, there costs are about the same as everyone else and they offer great facilities. A hosting company makes your web site available on the www and routes all your emails.
ARE YOU IN NEED OF A WEB SITE FOR YOUR BUSINESS?
Everyone in business should have a web site. It doesn't need to be complex, multi-paged or full of moving images and clever click-throughs.
Where is the first place anyone looks for anything nowadays? - ON THE WEB.
- Your web site gives prospective customers confidence in you and your company
- Your web site can tell customers all about you
- Your web site can tell customers about the services on offer
- Your web site allows your suppliers to check you out and gives them confidence that you are serious about business
Office Assist can create a simple two or three page web site that describes you and your company. That lists your services. That includes contact details for your company. You can also add logos from any affiliations, you may have, photos of work you have done and comments from satisfied customers.
All this can be done at a relatively low cost
Create a site with up to THREE different pages,
including first three months free updates . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . £150
OR Create a site with up to FIVE different pages,
including first three months free updates . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . £190
After first three months, optional Annual Support Fee . . . . . . £36
Annual Support Fee includes all corrections, updates and minor changes to the site throughout the year. Major changes such as adding new text, images or pages will be charged at an hourly rate. This will be quoted on an item by item basis.
If you think you will need more than three or five pages I will be pleased to discuss with with you and quote a price. It is also easy to add additional pages after the first basic package, again costs can be quoted.
HOSTING COSTS
These are paid directly to the Hosting Company. Once I have created your site it remains on the hosting server so long as you pay the monthly hosting fee and the annual domain fee. These fees are generally paid by registering credit card with the hosting company and are paid automatically.
